Mass Surveillance Self Defence Workshops

POSTED IN workshop

We are pleased to announce the first dates for our Mass Surveillance Self Defence Workshops;

Wednesday 9th November 2016
Wednesday 7th December 2016

We will be holding these workshops at the Reading International Solidarity Centre (click here for a map) between 19:00 and 21:00.

In these workshops we will be explaining common forms of existing and proprosed Mass Surveillance (Bulk Interception, Stingrays, Internet Connection Records etc), touching on targeted surveillance (RIPA powers, communications data, etc) and then we'll show you how you can frustrate this invasion of your privacy using tools such as;

  • Tor
  • TAILs
  • Signal
  • GPG
  • SSL / TLS
  • Full disk encryption (for data at rest)

The workshops will touch on themes such as threat modeling (are you messaging your friend about going to the cinema verses are you a human rights whistleblower?), the risk of meta-data (e.g. the who, what, where of communications) and the future of state surveillance and Internet censorship in the UK (the Investigatory Powers Bill and Digital Economy Bill).

These workshops are free to attend having been paid for by donations and membership dues.

We would recommend bringing;

  • Your laptop (We'll show you how to install and configure the Tor Browser Bundle, GPG and depending on your Operating System enabling full disk encryption)
  • A notepad / pen & paper
  • An empty USB drive (onto which we'll assist you with installing The Amnesiac Incognito Live System)
  • Questions and skepticism

Any questions can be sent to (This email server will reject messages if your mail server does not support STARTTLS) or @BrassHornComms on twitter.
